Stéphan Zientara (62) obtained his veterinary degree in 1987 (Nantes veterinary school), a PhD in virology in 1995 and obtained an HDR (research habilitation) in 2001. Stéphan Zientara is director of the ANSES animal health laboratory in Maisons-Alfort (France), head of the European Union reference laboratory for equine diseases (including West Nile virus infection) and the WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health) reference laboratory for Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and deputy head of the European Union reference laboratory for foot-and-mouth disease. Stéphan Zientara is an animal health expert for international organisations such as WOAH, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation), EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and EU (European Commission) on viral diseases (African horse sickness, foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, West Nile virus, etc.). His research focuses on several aspects of animal virology, in particular vector-borne viruses (orthoflaviviruses and orbiviruses).
